NEWS AND EVENTS

From The Rector's Desk
I was fortunate to attend a retreat in the Diocese of Long Island 17 years ago led by Kenneth Leech, the famous Anglican writer whose book I had to study in my Pastoral Care class. I remember him looking over his glasses and saying with some directness to us, "Gentlemen there will come a time in ministry when you will tire your parishioners out and you must be honest enough to leave."

Last Sunday (June 6, 2014) I gave notice to the Wardens and members of St. Monica's vestry of my intentions to resign as rector of St. Monica's as of July 31, 2014. My last  Sunday will be July 27, 2014, God being my helper. Seventy-eight months is a long time for me in any parish; God has been good to me and with a sad and grateful heart I will say our good byes on July 27, 2014.

ITEM OF INTEREST

Thanks Father Davidson
Thanks Father Davidson for all that you did for Saint Monica's Episcopal Church. I looked forward to your sermons. Your discussion and interpretation of the scripture were enlightening; yet you also related your sermons to the daily lives of the congregation. You also tended to the financial viability of Saint Monica's. You understood the importance of an endowment for the Church and you created Gift Day. You associate the giving of a specific amount of money to an important date in Saint Monica's history. Brilliant. I would be remiss if I did not also thank your dear wife Maureen. She was always cordial yet aware of what needed to be done.

In today's world one is never farther than a click away and so I hope you and Mrs. Davidson stay in touch with Saint Monica's. Until then, God Bless both of you.

THE BOOK CORNER
Flowers For Algernon
by Daniel Keyes

The story of Charlie Gordon and Algernon the mouse is unique, literally, there is no other book remotely like it. A mentally retarded man who doesn't even know how cruelly he's being treated at work undergoes an experimental surgical procedure and develops first a normal intellect, then a genius-level one, and then reaches new peaks of cognitive power yet unseen in the world. What he goes through as his memories lay open to his new power and he has to accelerate from permanent childhood he has lived in to a mature adult is displayed in loving detail.

The book is a series of "Progress Reports" written by Charlie, at first terribly misspelled and in his writing we see his powers growing. The book has been twice made into film and the Cliff Robertson/Claire Bloom film is an excellent adaptation, chilling in parts, and a classic movie. F4A is a classic book., a masterpiece.
