CHURCH NEWS FOR JULY 2009

Diocesan Day of Awareness and Diocesan Day of Repentance

This is an excerpt from the document sent to clergy and wardens of the Parishes of the the Diocese of Connecticut by Bishop Andrew D. Smith. The complete document is available via email and is posted on St. Monica's bulletin board.

The 2006 General Convention of the Episcopal Church asks the entire Church and its constituent bodies to engage in historical investigations of our Church complicity in, and benefit from, the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and its aftermath. The Resolution asks us to initiate a comprehensive effort to research, collect, document and share realities which shaped, and continue to affect, our Church life-how the Church, its leaders and its members participated in the slave trade economy and how the Church materially and culturally benefited from the slave trade.

As your Bishop, I have called our diocese to recognize, understand, and offer repentance for our own Church's involvement in the activities of the slave trade, and to know the ways in which we as a Church benefited from it. We have asked each parish of the diocese to research its own history and that of its community. We have scheduled a diocesan Day of Repentance at Christ Church Cathedral, Saturday, November 7, 2009. Also, I ask that all of our churches throughout the diocese to dedicate Sunday, September 20, 2009 as a Day of Awareness. My request is that some part(s) of our worship that day address the reality of slavery in our Church.

As our Church family faces our untold involvement in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, we will have a deeper knowledge of how we have benefited and been shaped by our past. We will be far more aware, I pray, of the inequities among the races, with which we still live, and by God's grace, we may chart a course for equality under God for all peoples with renewed humility and vigor.

Father Davidson August 2, 2009
Father Davidson will be away Sunday, August 2, 2009. He will attend a High School reunion with former parishioners and friends. Father Davidson will be back in the office on Tuesday, August 4, 2009. Father Thomas Beck will be our supply priest at both services.

Homecoming September 6, 2009
Sunday, September 6, 2009 is Homecoming. Plans are in place to have a Fun Day on Saturday, September 5, 2009. On Sunday, September 6th we hope to use the day to look ahead at the ministries and programs we would like to do to enrich the life of our parish. There will be more information in the future.

Alter Guild Members at the 8 a.m. Celebration
Again, Father Davidson appeals for men or women at the 8 a.m. celebration to offer themselves to serve on the Altar Guild. The duties are to prepare, with others, for Sunday celebration and to keep our vestments and vessels in good order.

Prayers for Our Sick and Recovered Members

Please pray for Pat Nelson and Ruth Colvin, who are ill. We thank God for the recovery of George and Pauline Scott and Erika Feurtado.

Annual Parish Picnic July 19, 2009
Everything was perfect for the Annual Church Picnic. The weather was sunny, warm but not humid. We laughed and talked with friends and new acquaintances. It was a day to relax and enjoy the moment. Of course a picnic means food and what delicious food we had. There was barbecue, corn on the cob, grilled hot dogs, salads, meat patties, mouth watering desserts, the list goes on and on. We express our heartfelt thanks to the picnic committee, everyone who brought food to share and all the volunteers that made the day a success.

The Food Pantry

The Food Pantry will open on Wednesday, July 15th. from 10:00 a.m. - 12 noon. Volunteers are needed for Wednesday and Fridays. Please see Mr. Lewis or Mrs. MacBeth. Parishioners are encourage to bring nonperishable food items on Sunday. The Soup Kitchen will begin on Saturday July 18th from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Honduras
Please keep the people of Honduras in your prayers during this unsettle time, following the recent military coup which ousted elected President Manuel Zelaya. Many members of our diocese have done mission work in Honduras in recent years, and we are all concerned about unrest resulting from the political crisis there.

Independence Day USA
On Sunday, July 5th we celebrated the independence of the United States of America. The Coffee Hours at both the 8:00 a.m and 10:30 a.m. Service were well attended. The refreshments provided by the American born members were delicious.

THE BOOK CORNER FOR JULY 2009

Moses, Man of the Mountain
by Zora Neale Hurston

Hurston incorporates the African tradition into her retelling of the Exodus story. The novel is remarkably faithful to the original. Moses is presented warts and all. As expected, he's the savior who leads a slave nation from captivity to the freedom of a Promised Land, the wise prophet who brings law and government to an unruly and divided people. Hurston manages to make this timeworn story new again for modern readers.
