NEWS AND EVENTS

From The Desk Of The Rector
Elijah found it necessary to prophesy against Ahab, the king of Israel, because he forsook God and worshiped Baal, the god of his wife Jezebel. Ahab sought to kill Elijah but he failed because God was on Elijah's side. Elijah was echoing what the people knew: "you shall have no other God before me" Exodus 20:3.

Our loyalty to God is questioned every day of our lives, by friends, by society, and by our own selfishness. Often we complain to God. Our experience of God is sometimes forgotten and we forget to count our many blessings. Our obedience to God is extremely important in order for God to work in and through us. Loosing ourselves in God and trusting in His every word will bring forth the results God has in store for us.

Remember the words Proverbs 16;9: "A man's mind plans his ways, but the Lord directs his   steps." We pray for a mind that knows and trusts God and for a heart to love and trust Him to deliver us.

The Empty Chair Near The Alter
No matter how full an Episcopal church may be on Sunday, chances are no one will be sitting in a sometimes ornate chair located somewhere near the alter. This special seat is a sign and symbol of the unity and authority that comes from the particular way Episcopalians have of organizing themselves: it's the bishop's chair.

The bishop has one main seat; its Latin name is cathedra. This is where we get the word cathedral; literally, the place where the bishop is seated. However, bishops get out a lot, regularly visiting parishes, which is why we keep a seat for them. this is a reminder not only of the authority of the bishop, but of the bishop's prayers and presence with us. The empty chair, then, serves as a reminder for us to pray for our bishop as well.

THE BOOK CORNER
The Princes of Ireland
By Edward Rutherfurd

Edward Rutherford has proved with such novels as Russka, Sarum London and The Forest, that he is a great historical novelist in the mould of James Michener. In this sweeping saga of Ireland, we are taken from the eloping and flight of the striking Deirdre and her lover, Conall in 440 to the destruction of Ireland's ancient monastic heirlooms, during the Reformation, in 1537.

Rutherfurd traces the fortunes and interactions of several Irish families down the centuries - the O'Byrnes, the Harolds, the McGowans, Doyles, Walshes and Tidys. Through the sweep of Irish history which Rutherfurd covers, it is also rich in human interactions and empathy as we get to know the wonderful men and women of Ireland through the ages, as the families and traditions of the nations are molded.

I will look forward to reading the sequel.
