NEWS AND EVENTS

From The Rector's Desk
On the Day of Pentecost we recall the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples and others. We thank God that we are not "orphaned" and that the Holy Spirit, promised by Jesus, is our Comforter and guide and will bring us into all truth. Let us invite the Holy Spirit to "melt us, mold us, filled us".

Pentecost
Fifty days after Jesus' resurrection, the disciples assembled in what may have been the same upper room where the Last Supper took place. There they were surprised by an experience that empowered them to proclaim the gospel. It was, they said, as if a fire fell on them and filled them. Like Ester, Pentecost is a day for baptisms and a day to celebrate the Holy Spirit who renews and strengthens Christians for ministry. To represent the fire of the Spirit, Pentecost is also the one Sunday of the Christian year when the vestments and hangings are always red.

THE BOOK CORNER

Watership Down
by Richard Adams

It seem superfluous to add another five star review for Watership Down, but this book deserves this and more. I was enthralled by this unlikely but iconic story about rabbits. Pure genius. Yes, it is about communities of rabbits living on the downs of England. Yes, they speak to each other and deal with a myriad of problems surviving, including all-out war with another warren. It's not like anything else you could probably ever read. A father wrote it for his two young daughters and thank God they asked him to. He created, not just rabbits, but full-out wonderful characters, a beautiful and thrilling story and a poignant adventure from beginning to the very end. I absolutely loved it. You just can't imagine how wonderful it is. Many people have to be prodded and coerced to read it and then they immediately go off to rave about it to other dubious folks... converts.
